Mario Van Peebles Previews His New Film at Spelman

Director and actor Mario Van Peebles stopped by Spelman Nov. 10 to engage with students about the film industry and his new movie, “We the Party.” Also students in the English class of professor Tarshia Stanley, heard from several actors in the film, including Peebles’ daughter Maya and son Mandela.  Peebles describes,  “We the Party” as a cutting-edge hip-hop infused dramedy about the first generation of high schoolers to come of age during President Obama’s years.

 

DMIS Discusses Cross Cultural Communication

On Nov. 9, the Digital Moving Image Salon presented a panel on “Cross Cultural Communication in Technology, News Media & Film.”  The discussion addressed various opportunities and disadvantages faced when communicating cross culturally via the Internet. Featured panelists included Dancia Kimbol, principal, beeverywhere.tv; Dr. Ayoka Chenzira, founding director, DMIS; Octavia Nassir, founder of Bridges Media Consulting; and Dr. Kendra King, associate professor of politics, Oglethorpe University.

 

Spelman Empowers Young Girls

The College is inspiring important values in young girls this fall. On Nov. 19, 40 seventh- and eighth-grade girls attended the Fifth Annual Girls Leadership Conference, produced by the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement. Through sessions, workshops, and other activities, the girls explored their leadership potentials as well as their interests in science, technology, engineering and math.  On Dec. 3-4, girls ages 10 to 14 will have the opportunity to engage in inner-circle learning experiences at the My Power Girl Power Media conference, produced by The Mindful Community. Connecting with arts and media professionals, the girls will define media and its role in society; discover careers in media; and discuss protecting their cyber-identity and the images of girls and women in the media. They will also tour Clark Atlanta University’s radio station and create media in video, writing and photography clinics.
